For four years, John Lewis-Stempel managed three and a half acres of mixed woodland in south west Herefordshire that stands as exemplar for all the small woods of England. This is the diary of the last year, by which time he had come to know the wood intimately, along with the animals that live there - fox and pheasant, wood mouse and tawny owl. For many fauna and flora, woods like Cockshutt are the last refuge, just as it was to prove a sanctuary for John himself.
